Etymology: Gr. adj. thermos, hot; Gr. n. lithos, stone; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. suff. -ia, ending to denote a class; N.L. neut. pl. n. Thermolithobacteria, thermophilic lithotrophically growing rods.
