Verrucomicrobium Schlesner 1988, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Verrucomicrobiales Ward-Rainey et al. 1996; type genus of the family ¤ Verrucomicrobiaceae Ward-Rainey et al. 1996).
Type species: ¤ Verrucomicrobium spinosum Schlesner 1988.
Etymology: L. n. verruca, a wart; N.L. neut. n. microbium (from Gr. adj. mikros, small and Gr. n. bios, life), a microbe; N.L. neut. n. Verrucomicrobium, warty microbe.
