Introduction

Validation Lists are lists published in the IJSB/IJSEM, serving as a mechanism for validly publishing prokaryotic names which have been effectively, but not validly published.

Announcement in a Validation List is primarily the responsibility of the author(s) of the new names or new combinations. However, other individuals may also submit a new name or new combination for valid publication, provided it conforms to the rules of the code. Scientists wishing to have new names and/or combinations included in a list should send the pertinent reprint or a photocopy or a PDF file thereof to the IJSEM Editorial Office.

Citation in a Validation List is not automatic! Papers will be reviewed by a IJSM Editor and by the Lists Editor.

Starting in August 2002, it is also a requirement of the IJSEM and the ICSP (International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes) that authors of new species, new subspecies and new combinations provide evidence that types are deposited in at least two recognized culture collections in two different countries (i.e. documents certifying deposition and availability of type strains). New names and/or combinations will not be cited in Validation Lists until such documentation has been received by the Lists Editor.
On 29 July 2002, the Judicial Commission confirmed this decision, although rare exceptions can be accepted in those cases where maintenance conditions for the culture are so exceptional (e.g. obligate barophilies or extremely virulent pathogens) that not more than one culture collection can be found which is able to maintain the strain.

Notes:

1) The names validly published by notification in validation lists n° 1, n° 2 and n° 3 have been included in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. The date of valid publication is that of publication of the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names (1 January 1980).

2) Nineteen names appear twice: Actinokineospora, Actinokineospora riparia, Bifidobacterium saeculare, Brevibacterium casei, Brevibacterium epidermidis, Clostridium puniceum, Enterococcus sulfureus, Halobacterium mediterranei, Methanothrix thermoacetophila, Nitrobacter alkalicus, Nitrospira, Nitrospira marina, Planctomycetaceae, Planctomycetales, Rhodococcus opacus, Staphylococcus chromogenes, Tetragenococcus, Tetragenococcus halophilus, and Thermus scotoductus.
The date of valid publication of the names is in fact that of the first citation in a validation list.

3) Thermus profundus Kobayashi et al. 1995 (validation list n° 52) is an orthographically incorrect name. The correct entry (Thermococcus profundus Kobayashi et al. 1995) appears in validation list n° 53 and the date of valid publication is that of validation list n° 53.

4) Desulfobacter giganteus (validation list n° 26) should read Desulfovibrio giganteus Esnault et al. 1988.

5) The names Peptococcus heliotrinreducens corrig. Lanigan 1983 and Proteus penneri Hickman et al. 1983 were inadvertently omitted from validation list n° 10. These names are to be regarded as having been validly published in list n° 10 (See: Erratum. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1983, 33, 673.).

6) The union of Amorphosporangium Couch 1963 (Approved Lists 1980) with the genus Actinoplanes Couch 1950 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Stackebrandt and Kroppenstedt 1988, was inadvertently omitted from validation list n° 26. This union and amended genus are to be regarded as having been validly published in list n° 26 (See: Erratum. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1989, 39, 94.).

7) Thermodesulfobacterium mobile (Rozanova and Khudyakova 1974) Rozanova and Pivovarova 1991 appears in ¤ validation list n° 36. However it is an incorrect name and it is cited below as Thermodesulfobacterium thermophilum (Rozanova and Khudyakova 1974) Rozanova and Pivovarova 1995, comb. nov. (publication date: 9 January 1995).

8) Propionivibrio Tanaka et al. 1991 was inadvertently omitted from validation list n° 37. The effective date of validation is that of list n° 37 (See: Erratum. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1992, 42, 328.).

9) Burkholderia pseudomallei (Whitmore 1913) Yabuuchi et al. 1993 was inadvertently omitted from validation list n° 45. The effective date of validation is that of list n° 45 (See: Erratum. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1993, 43, 625.).

10) The Paenibacillus species cited in list n° 52 were inadvertently omitted from validation list n° 51. The effective date of validation is that of list n° 51 (See: Erratum. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1995, 45, 201.).

11) The Streptomyces species cited in list n° 58 were inadvertently omitted from validation list n° 38. The effective date of validation is that of list n° 38 (See: Validation List N° 58, footnote e. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1996, 46, 836-837.)

12) The species Crinalium epipsammum De Winder et al. 1991 appears on the validation list n° 38. However, the genus Crinalium is not validly published. So, Crinalium epipsammum is illegitimate.

13) Alcaligenes denitrificans subsp. denitrificans (ex Leifson and Hugh 1954) Rüger and Tan 1983 seems inadvertently to have been omitted from validation list n° 15. This error is corrected below.

14) The subgenera Moraxella (subgen. Branhamella) and Moraxella (subgen. Moraxella) appear in validation list n° 15. However, according to the Judicial Opinion 83, these subgenera are to be treated as having been included on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Consequently these two subgenera have been deleted from Validation List n° 15.

15) The subgenera Acetobacter and Gluconoacetobacter appear in validation list n° 17. The nomenclatural types of these subgenera are cited as Acetobacter (subgen. Acetobacter) aceti and Acetobacter (subgen. Gluconoacetobacter) liquefaciens, respectively. However neither Acetobacter (subgen. Acetobacter) aceti nor Acetobacter (subgen. Gluconoacetobacter) liquefaciens are listed. These names seem inadvertently to have been omitted from validation list n° 17 and they are cited below.

16) Nematospora sinecauda is cited in validation list n° 25. However, Nematospora sinecauda is a yeast and it is omitted below.

17) Streptococcus thermophilus (ex Orla-Jensen 1919) Schleifer et al., nom. rev. is erroneously cited in validation list n° 54.

18) In validation list n° 77, Ralstonia oxalatica is erroneously cited as Ralstonia oxalaticus (sic).

19) Despite the publication of Prochlorococcus marinus subsp. marinus and Prochlorococcus marinus subsp. pastoris in the September 2000 issue of the IJSEM, these subspecies are listed in the validation list n° 79 because the genus name Prochlorococcus and the species name Prochlorococcus marinus had not standing in nomenclature at that time.

20) The taxonomic categories above the rank of class are not covered by the Rules of the Bacteriological Code (1990 Revision) [Rule 5b]. However, two divisions are cited on Validation List n° 15, nine phyla (divisions) are cited in Validation List n° 85, and one phylum is cited in Validation Lisy n° 98. So, names of taxa above the rank of class are listed below.
