Type species: ¤ Zobellia galactanivorans corrig. Barbeyron et al. 2001.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Zobellia, named after C.E. ZoBell, who has isolated and characterized numerous marine bacteria, notably [Cytophaga] uliginosa in 1944, and for his general contribution to the taxonomy of marine bacteria.

2 Zobellia galactanovorans Barbeyron et al. 2001 was previously known as "Flavobacterium droebachense" (Lundestad) Bergey et al. 1930, "Pseudomonas droebachense (sic)" (Lundestad) Stanier 1941, or "Cytophaga drobachiensis" Barbeyron et al. 1998.

Note: According to Rules 27(3) and 30, this name is not validly published because the effective publication makes no reference to the deposit of the type strain in any publicly accessible service collection, but deposits in at least two recognized culture collections in different countries are documented. According to the Judicial Opinion 81, Zobellia uliginosa (ZoBell and Upham 1944) Barbeyron et al. 2001 is to be considered to be validly published.
